Businesses across Ireland are saving money and the environment by being in the Race Against Waste
You too can Take Action at home, at work, and in your area. Learn about the issues, what happens to our waste, and Irish/European legislation.
Introducing Race Against Waste
Race Against Waste is the Irish National Communications Campaign aimed at supporting and encouraging everybody to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle waste. There are many different aspects to this campaign that the Race Against Waste team will be involved in during this third year of the campaign.
Over the coming months we hope to report to you on some of the details of the campaign through this blogg. We will explain how we undertake waste audits all around Ireland in many different sectors, how we work very closely with some organisations to develop their Action At Work Programme and we will also fill you in on the many events held around the country.
Please stay tuned for regular updates on how you can join the Race Against Waste.
The Action Plan for the R.A.C.E. Mountmellick project was officially launched on 13th March. The Action Plan sets out waste reduction and recycling targets for the whole community, along with ideas for projects that can help do this. The targets set for Mountmellick are to:
- Increase household composting to 50%
- Increase household recycling to 40% and steel and aluminium can recycling to 50%
- Continue supporting and encouraging local businesses in waste recycling and reduction
- Encourage prevention of waste
- Ongoing Information Campaigns
The ‘Buddy System’ project will be the first undertaken by the community and will make great progress towards achieving these targets. It involves identifying a number of people throughout the community to volunteer to assist their neighbours or others in the community at starting up their own compost bin, implementing better recycling and being on hand to help them out if they get stuck. So far there has been huge interest in this from the community and we will keep you posted on how things progress.
The launch of the Action Plan also coincided with the unveiling of Mountmellicks 50ft ‘Waste Barometer’, which is located in the central square in the town and shows the current recycling level for the community.
